When police broke open the classroom's door with explosives, Morrison opened fire with a semiautomatic pistol before shooting hostage Emily Keyes in the head. The other remaining hostages escaped unharmed, and paramedics confirmed that Morrison had committed suicide shortly before police were able to enter the classroom. what's "before" in the sentence mean? If before shooting hostage Emily Keyes in the head ,he opened fire. So he didn't shoot her?

1. I suppose it means that first he fired at the police who were breaking open the door, then he shot the hostage.

3. Paramedics are emergency healthcare providers. Usually an ambulance would be staffed by paramedics.
"Parametric" is a word I have never seen before, but apparently it has specific meanings in the fields
