I thing "not very many" is oldfashion...i would say "quite a bit of" or very little.

"Not very many" refers to more than one thing, whereas "quite a bit of," or "very little" refers to one thing, for example, there are not very many of THEM, however, there is quite a bit of IT, or very little of IT.
