Grab and tug back

Hello everybody.

I don't know exactly what the underlined mean.

Would you please help me?

My father would pull in the mainsail letting the wind grab and tug at the mainsail as he grabbed and tugged back.

Then presumably you know what the rest means, I suppose. That means you know what 'grab' and 'tug' mean because those aren't underlined where they occur earlier.

That leaves only "back". And in this context
