Got/get

When are you supposed to say "I get it." and "I got it." (meaning I understand)

Sometimes I would hear a reply

"I get it" or sometimes "I got it".

Is it interchangeable?

Hi Anon; These expressions are very informal, so the meaning is variable, and depends a lot on the tone of voice. This is one interpretation... "I get it" = I understand you.
