Got to vs. have/has to?

Hello everybody! I'm new here on this forum.

My question is simply about, what's the difference between saying 'I got to go' and
'I have to go'.

In my ears, it's like both sentences are correct, and the meaning of the sentences are also the same?

Can someone explain me the difference?

  • I would say that "I've got to go" is a bit more emphatic than "I have to go", especially if you stress the word "got": - I've got to go!
  • If you drop the word "have" and say something that sounds like "I gotta go", then I would say that the meaning is the same as "I have to go", but "I gotta go" is much more informal and you will never see it in formal written English.

Thank you very much! .

So I can say 'I have to go' without being wrong? Now, Can sound a little bit strange, but I think the sentence 'I've got to go' sounds a little bit weird, althought it's a way to show emphasis.

Right. 'I have to go' is grammatically correct and means roughly the same thing as 'I must go'.
'I've got to go' also means that.
