Got themselves arrested VS got arrested themselves

These are 2 sentences I don`t understand clearly.......

quoted in Advanced grammar in use..

1. When Tom and Jack saw the robbery they called the police, but then they got arrested.

2. When Tom and Jack saw the robbery they called the police, but got themselves arrested.

(emphasises that Tom and Jack did something to make the police arrest them)

3. When Tom and Jack saw the robbery they called the police, but they got arrested themselves.

(emphasises that Tom and Jack were arrested, no the robbers)

Although there are explanations in brackets, I still don`t get them.. and first sentence too. don`t know what the last "they" refers to exactly and the passive form.

'They' refers to Tom and Jack in all the sentences. I don't know how to explain it any more clearly than your book does. #1-- The 'got' passive is more active than the 'be' passive, that is, it stresses the activity more, but the meaning is essentially the same.

quoted in Advanced grammar in use..

This just tells us that they (Tom and Jack) were arrested.

They got arrested means they were arrested.

2. When Tom and Jack saw the rob

Wow....... I got surprised again at your answer!! in particular, the remark for the last "they".

When I first saw the "they" I was greatly confused!! cause a natural context of the sentence should be like "police should arrest the robbery!".

Also, got confused by the part <got arrested by police or something plus added themseles...>

Anyway.. your answer got my rev
