Got into/on elevator?

Hi,

Which is correct?

got into or got on an elevator? I feel it's both because if we think of an elevator as a room, 'in' would be appropriate. If we think of it as a floor, then 'on' would be suitable. So I feel we can use both.

Hopefully, someone can clarify.

Warmly,

I think either one. There were a lot of us waiting, but we were all able to squeeze into the elevator without too much discomfort. She hopped on the elevator and was at her destination in no time at all.

Sure. Why not?

in and into show that the speaker is conceptualizing the elevator as an enclosure.
Compare: in/into a room, in/into a tent, etc.

on and onto show that the speaker is conceptualizing the elevator as a means of transportation.
Compare: on/onto a bus, in/ont
