Got a little ahead of ourselves

regardless the outcome of the 2012 election. We got a little ahead of ourselves as we teared up to President Obama’s speeches, but we youngsters tend to do that. It is unfair to say that President Obama “failed us” simply because he was given a GIANT hole out of which to climb. If the economy had been fine on January 20, 2009, Obama’s “Yes We Can” vision still would’ve required a lot of time. On top of that, Republican minorities in Congress and a Tea Party deftly exercised rising powers to obstruct the President’s agenda

From the above context, what does the phrase "got a little ahead of ourselves" might mean?

Thanks in advance,
