- I have taught Medical English for a long time and have found the Oxford English for Careers texts to be best. 8 texts in all Medicine 1 and Medicne 2 plus teachers books. Nursing 1 and Nursing 2 plus teachers books. These cover everything you will need to teach medical practitioners and registered nurses. Familiarity with these texts will also teach you how to use your own resources (hospital experience is the best) to teach other areas. Other fields such as Pharmacy, physiotherapy, dentistry, are not so well covered in Medical English texts. However once you are familiar with the Oxford series (which taught me a lot about how doctors think, I trained as a registered nurse many moons ago) it is amazing what you can dig up and use, including the knowledge bases of students. General experience for a few years as a standard ESL teacher is invaluable too.
The Australian OET (Occupatuipnal English testing) courses publish good, but very expensive, exam course materials for allied fields. OET is the medical equivalent of IELTS in Australia and a certain standard in either of these exams is mandatory befoere a person who traind as a health professional in a non-English speaking country can even consider working in this country. I have taught these course too, as well as IELTS courses.
The Book Depository is a good place to buy the suggested texts online. Otherwise Amazon and other online suppliers or ESL type bookshops. Cheers and good luck malco
