Good decent people like anybody else

Hello!

Is there an expression in English that means the following:

"they are good decent people like anybody else" (in Russian we have "people like people", meaning "ordinary and good".) The context is as follows:

How come, we were good decent people and suddenly everybody's the village idiot... (The speaker is perplexed by the fact that kind well-educated people, who were the majority a while ago, have taken on this I-don't-know-I-don't-care attitude or have been replaced by such).

Thanks.
