Good Books To Learn Basic English.

I'm very embarrassed to say my understanding of english is very poor in all areas really, at 27 i have decided to do something about this after leaving school at 15 and not doing well because i did not apply myself for various reasons of which i wont bore you with, but i understand the importance of education so i am receiving tutoring, but would like something that will give me a solid platform of the basics so i can progress and understand things more intrinsically.

There seems to be an abundance of books out there, and i am unsure where to turn, or if maybe a volume of books would be a better option, and i apologise for any mistakes made in writing this, as i am sure my wording and such is poor, thank's in advance for your help.

Marcus.
