"Gone where all good niggers go!"

I was at a supermarket checkout here in England today, and overheard a snippet of good-humoured banter from an old man in the next checkout. It went:
"Gone with the wind!!"
Then, as an afterthought, he added:
"..Gone where all good niggers go! That's what they used to say, wasn't it?!".
I'm not sure who the "they" were, who he was referring to ;-) but I don't think I've ever hear that expression before. Have you? I searched the net for an instance of that phrase, and found nothing. Anyone know where it came from? A book? A poem? A movie? Or was it just a stock phrase that has fizzled out through lack of use?
