gone or been?

hello im not good with my grammar..so please correct this paragraph.



this is not my first time here in college because i had gone?

or i had been? to college in my country before i came here.

Both are correct, IMO, but gone seems to be more popular among educated users:

In your sentence I think it is "had been"

There is different between them. "Had been" indicated the complete thing. "Had gone" meant that you were still at college in your country when you said this was not my first time here at college.

He had been to Hong Kong.

He had gone to Hong Kong.

Above sentences are different. The first sentence meant you complet

The meaning implied by the original poster is not "to visit a university," but "to study at a university."

In terms of common usage, you'd usually hear

this is not my first time in college because i went (to college) in my country before i came here.
