GONE OFF THE DEEP END FROM

Hi friends of the forum,
could someone help me with that?:

'...and then Woody Shaw had GONE OFF THE DEEP END FROM drugs before he could get all the recognition I thought he would get.'
Does it mean that Woody Shaw went deep into drugs before he could demonstrate his value?

Thanks to everybody.
