Gone

I'm talking to my friend who recently returned from Dubai that doesn't recognize the city anymore.

He says: Wow, I don't even remember this place had these buildings here.

I say: You had been gone for too long, that's why! Or

You were gone for too long, that's why! Or

You've been gone for too long, that's why!<---- incorrect because he's already back and not gone anymore.

Which ones are useable and why is it incorrect?

Interesting. The only one you consider wrong is the only one I consider correct. The present perfect doesn't require that the predicate apply right up to the very instant of the utterance.
