Gold standard & staggering

Hello all,

I'd like to ask a few questions about what I wrote on one of the discussion forums I'm active on. Here's the fragment I wrote:

The only scenario when a conditional fails (or is untrue) is when the antecedent is true but the consequent is not.

If this rule is the determinant or the so-called gold standard, then I understand why we say that in all other cases conditionals are true. Still, having said that, I still find the last example to be staggering.

  • gold standard - I've found this one in my dictionary. Is it used correctly? Do native-speakers use it?
  • staggering - Initially, I wanted to say: this example simply staggers my imagination but I don't know if such a collocation is correct.

Should there be any other mistakes or errors in my sentences, I'd be grateful for having them pointed out to me.

Thank you very much!

"gold standard" feels a bit out of place. This phrase describes something of very high quality that can be used as a benchmark to judge other things. A grammatical or logical rule doesn't seem to be of the correct nature to be called a "gold standard".

  • "I find the last example to be staggering" doesn't sound right.
  • You can say "I find the last example staggering", but "staggering" is a strong word, and may be too much, or too emotional, for this context.
