Gold of poor quality & the quality of gold

Hello,
The two conundrum phrases:

(1) gold of poor quality;

(2) the quality of gold;

What do they mean? How to difine the two "of"?

(Here, what does the of mean?)

In "gold of poor quality", as your suggestion the "of" means : "the gold has a quaity of poor quaity" and the of means "containing" like the use of "a book of poems" / "a glass of beer"

Actually these phrases don't make sense. There is no such thing as the quality of gold. Gold is gold, a chemical element, and it cannot be broken down into other substances. The only thing you can say about gold is its purity, measured in karats. 24 karat gold is pure gold, unalloyed with other metals. 14 karat gold would be gold alloyed with some other metal.
