Do I say,

(a) He saw some precious stones in a box. They were gold.
(b) The chair turned / was turned to / into gold.

(a) This is grammatically correct, but to me it reads as if you are saying they were made of gold, which is not possible (precious stones are non-metallic minerals, e.g. diamond or ruby). If you are talking about their colour, you could say they were "gold-coloured".

(b) This is OK, but if you are talking about a magical transformation, I would prefer "to". "turned into" would be appropri

How about "was turned" and "turned"? both are correct?
