Going or went

Before going to college, she moved to Goring-on-Thames, United Kingdom. - This is the original sentence. Does the following one carry the same meaning?

Before she went to college, she moved to Goring-on-Thames, United Kingdom. - Don't know why but this one sounds a bit awkward. Is it because of the two 'she's'?

Thanks.

In that case, you probably don't feel comfortable with a bit of redundancy though both sentences, (1- in gerund form "going to college" ; 2- in clause form "she went to college"), practically carry the same thought.
