"Is going" is verb.

"Good" describes nouns.

"Well" modifies verbs.

GOOD is an adjective. Simply stated, it is used with nouns.

WELL, on the other hand, is an adverb. It is used with verbs.

GOING is a verb form, thus WELL would be the appropriate form to use.

The answer you gave makes sense. but the question should drive the response. In my mind, the question, "How is it going?" is defined by the listener. Their answer drives whether a noun like thier "life" is going good or their verb "living" is going well...

But you'll often hear people say: It's going good.

It would need the adverb form (well), but in common usage people don't always follow rules.

But, you're not describing how things '"are". You're describing how things "are going". So yes, you could say "life is good". But if you add "going", it would be "life is going well"
