Hello,Is my sentence correct?The man was supposed to take care of his friend's pet while his friend goes/ was going on a trip, but the pet escaped somehow and he doesn't know what to do.Thank you in advance.

when you say the man is supposed to take care of his friend pet==> this is present
but when you say the pet escaped==> this is past! you see the problem?
