Goddammit

0 Hi,02br
00I'd like to know if interjections like "Goddammit" and "Goddam" are more rude or taboo than I actually think. Those are two of my favorite expressions that I tend to use a lot, but I wonder how rude they are. For example, I know that "Damn", "Dammit" and "Oh my God" are widely accepted, but how would you rate "Goddammit" and "Goddam", also compared to other interjections?02br

0Hi,02br 02br 00I wouldn't say these in school, or at the office, or in a job interview. Whether you say them in casual conversation to your friends is up to you. 02br 02br 00Clive0-

0Yes, I'm not sure why, but "Oh my ***!" and "Dammit" are mostly okay (not in church, not at the job interview, etc. as Clive says) but "Goddammit" is really quite a big more offensive, at least where I grew up. Maybe it sounds more blasphemous and therefore offends our Puritan ancestry. 02br

It would be considered offensive in a religious sense because it is as if you are saying "**** be to ***" as if "damning" him to ****...it's as if you're directly cursing at Christian's beloved ***. So there's that. But those are the only people who would care.

I don't agree that the idea is that you are damning ***.

When you say eg '******* Tom', you are really saying 'May *** **** Tom'.
In other words, you are inviting *** to do some damning.
