God-fearing

Macon County people are down-to-earth, hardworking, God-fearing people.

How to understand down-to-earth and God-fearing? If I made a word, God-feared, then what can this mean?

Top answer

These people are good, simple folk. "Down-to-earth" means practical, or"both feet on the ground," as my mother-in-law likes to say. They are realistic and pragmatic, not philosophers or dreamers, and notlikely to be carried away by crazy impulses.

If you made up the word "***-feared," we would have no idea what you meant. It might mean "feared by ***," which would be an unusual concept.

English has lots and lots of words already -- it's generally best to choose among the ones that already exist instead of making up your own, if you want people to understand your meaning.
