God bless him?

Hi everyone,

In some cultures, when someone says that his mother or father died, it's expected that you say "god forgives him/her"... I like to ask about English culture and language, when someone says that e.g. his father died two years ago, what should we say as a listener?

Best Regards
Babak

There isn't a strict rule about what to say. There are multiple things that can be said.

Whatever we say, we generally begin with "I'm sorry (to hear that)", as Mr M did.
