Can I say,

Peter gave a poor old man some food. The poor old man gobbled (up) the food very fast.

Do not say "very fast." that is implied by "gobbled" and becomes redudant.

I think you can say "Peter gave a poor man some food. The poor man gobbled the food."

'Gobbled' means 'to eat fast' and hence 'fast' is not necessary.
