Go to (the) mosque

AS Hornby says that we should always use THE before 'mosque', 'temple' and 'synagogue'. So when one goes to a mosque either for prayer or to whitewash it, he should say "I'm going to the mosque". But another grammarian from Britain says that we should avoid using THE before mosque if we are going there for prayer and use THE when we are going there for anything other than prayer. Who is to be followed?

On the analogy of 'church', I would say omit 'the' when going for prayer, but a defining rule does not exist.
