"go to" or "goes to"

"The group go to London..." or "The group goes to London..." Which is correct and, more importantly, what sort of grammar rules/guides come into play?

I think it depends on how we view the group. If it is viewed as a group, the verb is 'goes'. If the group is viewed as individual members, then 'go' is the corre
