Go through many a gauntlet

Please consider the following sentence:

Jennifer Lawrence has gone through many a gauntlet on-screen, but nothing could compare to the “degrading” and “humiliating” experiences she faced early on in her career.

My questions are these:

1) What does "to go through many a gauntlet" mean?

2) Why is it "many a gauntlet" and not "many gauntlets"?

Thank you.
