Go through any extended period of time ?

Hi everyone~ I don't understand the sentence underlined, esp. the part in red.

What can be the meaning of "go through any extended period of time" in this context?

I tried to figure out the meaning but can't. If you have any idea, would you please tell me some?

Thank you~

Many teachers engage in a review process only at the beginning and the end of the academic year. However, for the process of achieving automation, such an approach is counterproductive. It is ongoing bursts of repetition that changes the brain structure to produce automation. Teachers should consider the review at a dedicated time, limited to 5 minutes per subject matter daily. For example, if a section of the curriculum lasting 2 weeks mandates that students be able to recall six new terms and their meanings, then during that 2-week period, the teacher will review terms and definitions for the first 5 minutes of class each day.

For automation to truly be solidified, students cannot go through any extended period of time without recalling prior automated information. Initially review should be every few days, then weekly, then monthly.
