Go shopping and do the shopping

Hello! Do tell me please if there is any big difference between the two expressions - to go shopping and to do the shopping. A friend of mine says they ARE slightly different in meanings: the first one - to go shopping - does not necessarily imply BUYING something, i.e. you may go shopping and come back home with an empty basket Emotion: thinking While ''to do the shopping" implies that you willcertainlybuy something (unless your purse is stolen Emotion: smile)

At the same time I remember reading somewhere that the difference between the two is of some other kind: if you go shopping, you buy some minor things like bread, milk, soap, etc. And when you do the shopping, you buy more expensive things like vacuum cleaners and stuff...

I would be delighted to hear your comments!

Thank you!

I do the weekly grocery shopping on Mondays. (I get milk, eggs, bread, etc.)

Let's have some fun and go shopping. (Just to go and look around, and if we see something interesting, we might buy it.)

"Go shopping" is more general. It could mean buying things you need regularly, or shopping for fun.

"Do the shopping" implies shopping is a chore - buying regular necessities or perhaps shopping to stock up for a particular purpose or event.
