Vocabulary

go on/run on

Hello,
Are these sentences correct: "The meeting ran on until 5 pm.", "The meeting went on until 5 pm."?

Top answer

Ran until and went on until have the same meaning to me ( lasted ). However, I feel that ran on until implies that it was unexpectedly or unusually long. This is just a gut-level reaction.

I'm with Philip. "Run on" has the echoes of its meaning of chattering incessantly .

If it's boring, I think we could also say "It dragged on until...", can't we? A BE speaker told me once that "go on" could have this meaning in British English (unexpectedly long and boring).
