Hi,
When somebody loses a kidney, their other kidney has twice as much work to do.
Would all these work?
1) “When his left kidney gave up, the other one went into overdrive.”
2) “When his left kidney gave up, the other one had to pick up the slack.”
3) “When his left kidney gave up, the other one switched to higher gear.”
Can you perhaps think of more phrases that would work here?
I apologise for the gloomy scenario, but it’s for the sake of learning.
Thank you.
Ann225 Can you perhaps think of more phrases that would work here? I can't think of even one because I am not a nephrologist, and I don't know what the remaining kidney does. It might become more efficient.

I can't think of even one because I am not a nephrologist, and I don't know what the remaining kidney does. It might become more efficient. It might grow larger. It might do something I can't imagine. That said, we "take" up slack, and we "shift" to a gear.
