Everyone in the office was asked to go in on the gift for the retiring vice-president.

Can any teacher explain the verb phrase go in on for me? Many thanks.

Thanks. I tried to know its meaning by heart, but I really had a hard time refering it to contribute. Why is go in on related to contribute?

It's very similar to CHIP IN which also means contribute. The key here is to understand the meaning of the preposition. In us used very often with the idea of including, being part of, being inside, etc.

Thank you for the information. Actually I just couldn't find go in on in some dictionaries. Phrases like go in for or go in with are much easier to find instead. I think that preposition on has troubled me a bit.
