Go first?

Hi teachers~

I am looking for an expression for this situatuon.

A is in an English discussion class. His teacher usually picks topics but they are difficult for him so he decides to pick topics before his teacher.

I am looking for an expression to describe a situation where A does sth first before sb else does it.
