Dear teachers ,I wonder if "go halves with some on /in something is the same in meaning as go fifty-fifty   with some on /in something ".Please correct if the following for me if they are not correct:I don't know when to use " on "and when to use " in "a/ I want to go fifty-fifty/halves  with him on/in  the taxi fare.b/ He and I will go fifty-fifty/halves in /on responsibility for the damage caused to the director's car.c/ We will go fifty-fifty/halves in /on the joys and sorrows in lifeIf possible , Please kindly give me some examples of go fifty-fifty/halvesThanks in advance

Without looking it up, my feeling on b/ is, if they understand each other to be talking about the money, people will treat it like a/. If they're talking about "owning up to it," a court case, culpability in the larger sense, they'll treat it like c/.

Sorry, I'm drawing a blank on fresh examples (different from yours).

I'm assuming your question is about my remarks on example b/. I probably should have researched this (probably still should) but I believe people use on when they're talking about paying money for something and they use in when they're talking about everything else, such as the joys and sorrows in life.

Personally, I've never used in. My mother's favorite doctor once said to her, "Some people think marriage is fifty-fifty. It's not. It's sixty-forty," meaning the woman has to give in most of the time. In terms of our present examples, we might say, We've decided to go fifty-fifty in our marriage. But we'd say, We've decided to go fifty-fifty on the wedding, referring to the cost of the wedding.

Incidently, I believe halves should be used only for money. We could go halves on the wedding but we wouldn't go halves in the marriage. Maybe I'm wrong.

Finally, I think people often use the word responsibility in referring to financial responsibility, more specifically, paying the bill. We'll go halves on responsibility for the caterer. But I think when we refer to culpability (look it up) we use in. You guys shared equally in committing this vandalism and should be equally punished. I think we'll go fifty-fifty in responsibility for the damage to the director's car. Or, The director admits he and I were equally at fault in the accident. He and I will go halves on responsibility for the damage to his car.
