Grammar

go easy on

Hi~ everyone!
While I was preparing for a test, I heard the following listening drill.

A :What should I do when one of the employees asks for extra holidays?
B : ........
a. You should go by the book.
b. You need to go easy on him.
c. Don't take advantage of the situation
d. Try to look at bright side.

To me it seems that the speaker B can answer to the speaker A with either the option 'a' or 'b'. What am I missing?

Many thanks in advance.

Without any more context, A is the best answer. B needs a context in which the relationship with the employee has involved some problems.
