Go down the wrong throat

I hear people say that "water went down the wrong throat". Is it a correct phrase? Could you please tell me what it means? Thank you.

If you start to cough and choke because water (or food) has entered the breathing passage instead of the swallowing passage, you might say it "went down the wrong way," or (maybe, certainly less commonly) it "went down the wrong throat." "Wrong throat" sounds odd because, of course, you have only one throat, but if I heard someone say it I would assume they meant something "went down the wrong w

"went down the wrong way" or "went down the wrong pipe" are the expressions I am familiar with.

My grandparents used to use that phrase. It Just means that some food, drink, even saliva was aspirated causing you to cough to get it back up.
