Go by the hospital

X: Do you still go by the hospital often?

Y: ...Almost every day.

X: How is she? Still not good?

Y: No.

Is "go by the hospital" the most natural way to say this? And can it be used if going to the hospital is the only purpose for an outing and not just a stop on the way to something else?
