go by a law

Can I use 'go by a law' ?
If it is incorrect how should I say it and could you give me an example where I can use if you go by european law, by US law?

Speed cameras have a buffer zone, 3 mph if you go by european law and 5 mph if you go by US law.

Thank you for the time and effort
