go and go to

Hello!
I know that I must use 'go' when I talk about 'going home' or 'going downtown'.
But I can't get a difference between 'downtown/home' and 'school/work' etc where I must use 'go to'. Can you please give me a bit more examples when I must use go and when go to (and why), on what principle these proposals are built?

I understand that when I talk about shopping, swimming I must use go because of "ing". But then it comes to the difference between home and school I can't get a point. Thanks.

go: home, downtown, uptown, there, away, back, forward, backward go to: school, work, church, college (Am), university (Br), town, hospital (Br) go to the: country, city, hospital (Am), office, post office, bank, park, supermarket ___________ I don't think there is any point to get. They are pretty arbitrary. The middle group above, however, focuses on participation in some activity that takes place at the location mentioned.
