With a growing population, many people believe that we should focus on producing more GM foods. What are the advantages and disadvantages of doing this?
The Earth’s population increases dramatically in two decades. There are more than 7 billion peoples around the globe and this number seems to keep growing up in future which means we need more foods. Fortunately, scientists find out genetically modified (GM) technique to increase productivity but it also brings out a wide controversy about the cons and pros of using GM products to humans’ health.
The fact that global population is gradually growing up makes us come to face the risk of lacking foods. Although our advanced technological inventions support to save labour in producing process, many countries nowadays have a high proportion of starvation, for examples African countries. The problem is that we already have had good agricultural techniques but high qualitative crops and cattle for our cultivation and husbandry. GM methods can help us deal with this problem by creating special crops and cattle which do not only have significantly higher productivity but also are able to live in poor natural condition.
GM method is a biological technique to make one or more change in plant or animal’s genes then those can have higher productivities than before which means a lot to satisfy our large demand for food. However, many scientists praise their concern about GM foods’ harm to human health. They argue that our whole genome could be change if we keep using these genetic modified foods. We all know that our genes play a determined role in creating our bodies’ physical characteristics and it is inherited to later generations. There is no evidence to prove their concern but it is not unreasonable at all, to be honest.
In conclusion, I agree that we absolutely can use GM foods as a temporary solution to tackle our demand of food which is rising along with growing population yet we also have to keep criticize its effects on human health in long-term of utilization.
