Glue/means/sticky substance

Dear all,

According to Tannen, women are more verbal – talk more – in private situations, where they use conversation as the “glue” to hold relationships together

Which word is similar in meaning to “glue” ?

  1. means
  2. sticky substance
  3. game
  4. rope

In my opinion, although glue is literally means a sticky substance, glue has a metaphorical meaning in the context above. The author referred to conversation as a means to establish a relationship. So I tend to think of "glue" in a figurative way rather than literal way.

Please clarify it for me. Thanks always.
