gloomy skies, gloomy sky

How come sometimes people use "sky" and other times use "skies," plural?
Using singular, I understand; it's intuitive, there's only one sky, but why plural?

My guess is that "skies" is used to indicate several days' sky. For example "The glooomy skies were all i remembered of the trip to London", plural.
And if i want to say something about today's weather, i say "today, we have a gloomy sky", singular.

I can't answer your question definitively, but I think you're on the way to understanding what is meant in different situations. Weather forecasters (affectionately known by some as weather guessers ) sometime use the plural 'skies', I think, because the sky in one area might be different from the sky in another area, even though they are within the same broadcasting area.
