These days, an increasing number of people are concerned about the pros and cons of globalization. Some believe that globalization brings enormous benefits to most countries in different fields such as economy, education, and politics; others, however, it has negative impacts on people and the environment. In my view, the disadvantages of globalization outweigh its advantages.
One of the negative effects is that people in industrialized countries may lose their jobs. With globalization, companies can move to countries where labor cost is cheap. Therefore, employees cannot be confident that they have stable jobs. For example, because of the fierce commercial competition between America and China, multi-national companies have flocked to Vietnam and set up their factories. As a result, many laborers in China have lost their jobs. In short, globalization caused job losses in developed countries.
Another disadvantage is that companies sometimes exploit their employees in developing countries. It means that laborers in these countries have to work long hours but receive very little money. For instance, the Hyundai-Vinashin shipyard in Vietnam hires employees and forces them to work extended hours but their wages are too low. Besides, they do not have sufficient insurance coverage such as social insurance or health insurance. Therefore, this is the reason why people in developing countries often remain poor.
Globalization has also bought a harmful effect on the environment. Globalization allows people to engage in international trade. Due to the long-distance, airplanes, ships, and lorries need to be used to transport products. It means that more carbon dioxide will be released into the environment, resulting in environmental pollution. To sum up, globalization is a serious cause of global warming.
To conclude, for the reasons mentioned above, I would argue that globalization brings more harm than good. In my opinion, to limit these negative effects, there should be global regulations for salaries and working conditions. At the same time, governments should impose laws to protect the environment.
