topic: glass ceiling for women

In the 21st century, women are still seeking for their rights in the workplace, especially women who get married. Most women consider the glass ceiling to be the main barrier for them to obtaining promotion in the workplace. The glass ceiling is a phenomenon that hinders women from achieving a higher level of authority work. Much research provides evidence that gender inequality exists in Korea For example, only 5 percent of managers in management domains are women in Korea, and the percentage of economic jobs of women held by women is only roughly 5.2 percent. This indicates that the glass ceiling is a severe issue and the status of the women in this Korean society is still considered to be lower than men.

There are two major reasons for the glass ceiling. First, gender stereotypes play a key role to prevent women from raising promotion to management positions. Gender stereotypes make women to be considered that less focused on their jobs because of their family. Women are usually viewed as an employees that always put family as their first priorities and have less loyalty to their business affairs. The other factor resulting in the lack of promotion for women employees is the conflict between job and family, especially for women who get married. Most married women need to take care of their children and need more time to accompany their children. This usually causes women to suffer from stress, including family and work stress when they do not strike a balance between their jobs and household work. Thus, it is easily for married women to be excluded from promotion list because they hardly fully concentrate at their jobs.

To deal with this issue, there are some efforts for the society and organizations to put. First, the government should educate the society that to achieve some certain purposes, this society needs the active presence of professional women to devote their capacity in every field(Omran,Alzadeh and Esmaeeli,2015). This means that the presence of women is necessary in every organization and field and finally, encourages professional women to pursue higher level of jobs. Also, every organization should make policies or programs for women staff to solve their work-family conflict. For example, the company can design a flexible schedule for married women staff or shorten their working days. This kind of policies not only give women employees more relaxation but also help them more commit to their jobs. Although there are some policies regarding glass ceiling have been made in most countries, it is still lack of education for the society and the corporations. Only the society and the corporations can fully understand the conflict of women’s dual roles and the importance of their presence, glass ceiling can be broken down.
