Given you or given to you?

Hi, could you please tell me if the sentence "Where is the letter given you by my father?" is correct? I suppose that I should say "the letter given to you" instead.
The same with the sentence "Foreign visitors rote about the animals shown them."
What rule should I use in such cases?

I would guess that it isn't a question of a rule, but one of usage. I believe that given you/shown them is more common in British English.
