Given...

Hi everyone,

What does "given" mean here in first sentence? Also,I would really appreciate if someone paraphrase the sentences for me. Emotion: smile

1-Not surprisingly, literature doesn't interest people as much as it used to, given there's so much other reading material now available.

2-Internationally popular novels like harry potter will clearly have the effect of unifying the world's taste in literature.

Thanks in advance.
