Can u use "give up on someone" to actually mean stop seeing?

It could be used when dealing with relationships, however it does have a negative connotations.

It could mean to forget about getting into a relationship with her, and hence give up trying to be with her.
It could also mean to lose hope for her (for example, if she refuses to change her ways.) and perish all thoughts of ever helping her.
I think the former is more suitable, though.
