Give up

Is it possible to use 'give up' in conjunction with listening to something, e.g. (when engaged in a conversation between people) 'When they started to discuss the specs of the new computer I gave up'. Is this correct?

Top answer

Yes. If there is no extra context to indicate that "gave up" refers to something else, this would be understood to mean that you gave up trying to follow or understand the conversation. I would probably put a comma after "computer".
