Is it correct the explanation?

Joan had to give up her job in 1980, when she had a baby.

Joan had to stop working in 1980, when she had a baby.

One of the meanings of give up can be:

When somebody gives up an activity, thry stop doing it.

When somebody gives up a job they resign or renounce voluntarily.

You can say either.

"She had to give up her job.............."
" She had to resign from her job......"

I would not use "renounce her job voluntarily".

You can also say "She had to stop working" - this is not wrong, it just does not make it so clear that this was permanent.
